Busy Summer

The orchestra is looking back on quite a busy and hot summer - hot in the sense of the band's repertoire, of course! In July, the cruise line company Holland America engaged the Pasadena Roof Orchestra for their trip from Rotterdam to New York and back. The band performed on several occasions on board - dinner dances, tea dances or even jazz matinées on deck. Despite playing 'Everything Stops for Tea' the engines, thankfully kept going! Every appearance on the ship was well-received. Hardly disembarked and back on solid ground, the band's summer festival season in Germany was under way. As part of Musiklandschaft Westfalen the P.R.O. played in Vreden, at the Jazzfestival Dissen, at the Rheingau Musikfestival in Wiesbaden and their 8th annual appearance at 'Jazz in Town'- the Festival in Berlin-Koepenick, as well as at the Brunnenhof in Munich. For the Munich concert the orchestra invited guest star Helen Schneider for a wonderful summer concert evening.

Surprise, Surprise!

Recently, the Pasadena Roof Orchestra had packed houses on its mini tour through Germany where they performed in Berlin-Koepenick and Trier. The "Jazz In Town"-Festival in Koepenick was celebrating its 15th Anniversary. In 15 years, believe it or not, the Pasadena Roof Orchestra has been performing there seven times. This year's appearance had a surprise for the audience as well as for the promoter. Singer Robin Merrill (orchestra member from 1979-1989) and meanwhile living in Berlin got a front seat in the audience and joined the show at the end of the 2nd half singing along together with Duncan Galloway "Puttin' On The Ritz".

What's this?

Saturday 17th July 2010, and the Pasadena Roof Orchestra performed inside the Perpendicular edifice of Lincoln Cathedral - but no! They weren't playing for Evensong! In fact, it was a sell-out charity concert, and the band sent wave after wave of soaring swing echoing round the Gothic vaults and flying buttresses.

A good recipe - JazzAscona 2010

Take some high mountains, a large blue lake, a picturesque town, a few stages, and a roster of international artists, mix it all together over 10 days and you have the 26th edition of the Ascona Jazz festival. The Pasadena Roof Orchestra was one ingredient last weekend, and entertained the festival crowd on two nights on two different stages. Despite some spectacular storms on the Saturday, the orchestra's performance went down very well. A real fan's enthusiasm won't be dampened by a little rain!

Jazz without frontiers

Germany is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its unification. Nov 9th 1989 was the historic day when the Berlin wall came down and the border between East and West Germany was opened. Last week the Pasadena Roof Orchestra toured some East German cities just as it did in the late 1970s and 80s when they were one of the very few Western artists who were allowed to perform in the DDR. So great was the Orchestra's popularity that in 1988 the album "Happy Feet" was licensed to AMIGA and released in the DDR.
